Clinton, OK – McDonalds, Kmart
895 miles When everyone’s asleep we can really pile on the miles, but we lost 2 hours in time zones so it’s not quite as impressive. Cass and I switched off a few times through the night. My favorite thing to listen to while driving is talk radio. Fortunately I caught “coast to coast overnight”, [...]

Outside Amarillo, TX – Rest Stop
687 miles Texas is full of the annoying little “parking area” rest stops without facilities, and very short on actual facilities. Wife opines that it’s somewhat sexist since men don’t really need facilities to go. Husband notes that it’s a cost savings for the state and keeps the taxes lower, and since men make all [...]

Somewhere NM – Rest Stop
529 miles This is one packed rest stop. Apparently most people want to sleep rather than drive at 2:30 in the morning. I am not most people.

Albuquerque – Gas Station
442 miles Fifth stop. Always have the damndest time finding a gas station here for some reason. No exception tonight. I’m not sure when it was decided that little red lights on towers was insufficient. But now you ocassionally come across towers with flashing hot white strobes of death. It’s a little distracting.

Deming, NM – Sonic
204 miles Third stop, dinner. Also home of the famous Hatch shortcut, described by some as the most lonely and desolate stretch in the land. But that’s selling some perfectly shitty roads elsewhere in the west awfully short.

Lordsburg, NM – Love’s truck stop
142 miles Second stop. Customary first stop for any trip east. Lowe’s is usually our first choice when we hit a clump of truck stops. I believe it’s where I heard about the birth of my nephew, still on our way back from a visit back home.

Bowie, AZ – Rest Stop
122 miles First stop, rest stop. There’s an EPA notice on the door stating they’re over the maximum levels for nitrate in the water, and they’re “investigating treatment options”. Sounds nasty. We’ve covered this stretch of road dozens of times now, but the view as you come over a crest and see a new valley [...]

Birthday
My family gave me a wonderful birthday yesterday, but I was unable to appreciate it. For the last 3 birthdays some point in the comes along, and I realize my mom won’t be calling me to sing happy birthday to me. Mother’s day is a little hard for similar reasons, but being able to celebrate [...]

Nasty Con Queso
“You’re going to buy that,” my wife cautiously asked? “Sure.” “It looks nasty.” “I think it looks good.” “It’s like food poisoning souffle or something.” “I guess we’ll have to make it tonight then,” I concluded, since she was going to be at a meeting during dinner time. Well, as usual, my wife was dead [...]
